Transcription factors are DNA-binding proteins capable of activating or repressing gene regulation. Transcription factors can operate alone or form homodimers and heterodimers. Some transcription factors, such as NFΚB and STAT, must undergo phosphorylation before they can bind DNA, while other transcription factors respond to ligand binding.
