Histone methylation is an important post-translational modification that is involved in regulating genome compaction and gene expression. Depending on the amino acid target, methylation can lead to transcriptional repression or activation. Histone methylation is facilitated by methyltransferases that add methyl groups to lysine or arginine residues of histones H3 and H4. Methylation of arginine residues is catalyzed by protein arginine methyltransferases (PRMTs) while histone methyltransferases (HMTs) are responsible for lysine methylation. The removal of these histone marks from arginine and lysine residues is catalyzed by protein arginine demethylase (PRDM) and lysine demethylase (KDM) enzymes, respectively.
