The function and activation of many proteins are controlled through post-translational modifications. The addition and/or removal of a variety of functional groups can cause conformational changes that alter a protein's shape, enabling it to bind other proteins or perform other tasks not possible prior to being modified. Phosphorylation, methylation, acetylation, ubiquitination and SUMOylation are just a few of the modifications that are involved in the regulation of protein activity and cell signaling.
